Junior Band Week is a weeklong summer program at the School of Music for students entering grades 4-10 in the upcoming school year. This is a full-day camp, 9:00am-4:00pm.

Junior Band Week aims to keep band students excited about making music over the summer ahead of rejoining their school's band program at the start of the new school year. We also offer a Fast-Track program for outright beginners designed to teach them what they need to know about their instrument of choice in order to succeed in the first year of school band.

Our program works with young musicians who currently play or want to learn to play instruments that are a part of their school's band, including:

  • Flute
  • Oboe
  • Clarinet
  • Saxophone (alto and tenor)
  • Bassoon
  • Horn
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • Euphonium
  • Tuba
  • Percussion
  • Electric Bass

Students participate in the following activities as part of Junior Band Week:

  • Full-band rehearsals and performances led by Junior Band Week co-directors Dr. Dylan Maddix and Sarah Comerford
  • Small-group, instrument-specific instruction led by music educators from the community and the School of Music
  • Jam Band rehearsals and performances led by jazz and improvisation educators
  • Breakout activities like drumming, musical games, and moving to music
  • Performances by local musicians

Junior Band Week culminates in a Showcase on Friday afternoon that includes performances by the Fast-Track program, intermediate and senior bands, and all jam bands. The Showcase is free and open to all family, friends, and supporters of the students.
