Holidays for medical learners are limited to the statutory holidays recognized by Memorial University and the Professional Assocation of Residents of Newfoundland & Labrador (PARNL) Collective Agreement
Good Friday
Victoria Day
Memorial Day (July 1)

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Thanksgiving
Remembrance Day
Christmas
New Year’s Day
Unless on call, learners are entitled to the holidays outlined above. Regardless of the holiday, call duty and designated shift work must be fulfilled. On-call duties or shift work cannot start on a holiday, but the end of on-call duties or shift work can fall on a Holiday.
Breaks
Phase 4 learners have a year-end holiday break, not less than one week in duration at the end of the calendar year
Post-Core Learners (4th year)
Learners in 4th year have a CaRMS Interview Period break each year.
The 2024 CaRMS Interview Period is 15 January 2024 - 4 February 2024*
Vacation
A Medical Learner Leave & Assessment Deferral form is required for each period of vacation in Phase 4. Any deviation from the vacation time stipulations outlined below must be discussed with the Phase 4 team.

Vacation must be taken in one (1) week blocks.

Learners must take four (4) weeks of vacation during academic year four (4).

At least one (1) week of vacation must be taken between the end of the 8710: Core Experiences course and before the start of the calendar year-end break.

At least one (1) week of vacation must be taken between the end of the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) interview period and before the start of the 8720: Advanced Procedural Competencies course.

Requirements for reassessment or remediation may impact the use of vacation time.

All deviations must be approved by the Phase 4 Lead.
