National Tree Day Celebrations
National Tree Day occurs each year on the Wednesday of National Forest Week. This year it falls on Wednesday, September 24. But we're going to celebrate right through Sunday!
Guided Tree Tours
Wednesday, September 24, 12:00-1:00pm
Join horticulturist Meg McCarthy for a tour of the trees of Memorial University's main campus. It is not well known that Memorial has some of the most interesting trees in the city. Come learn about tree identification, care, pruning and more as we see the campus in a new way. This tour is in celebration of National Tree Day, please join us in the courtyard and garden between the Arts, old Science, and Math buildings, rain or shine. This event is free, no registration required.
Wednesday, September 24, 2:30-3:30pm (Meg McCarthy)
Saturday, September 27, 2:00-3:00pm (Josh Elyk)
Join one of our horticulturists for a guided tour to learn all about trees! Come for a walk in the Botanical Garden as we tour the trees we love. Rare ones, flowering ones, big, small, from Newfoundland or from thousands of miles away. This tour will have you looking ‘up’ a lot more often. Regular admission rates apply. No pre-registration - just drop-in! Please meet in the Field Centre.
Self-Guided Tree Tours
Our scheduled tours don't work with your schedule? Come in anytime during our regular open hours and ask about our new Tree Identification Backpack program. You can borrow one of these backpacks, containing the tools and resources you need to explore the trees and shrubs found in our Garden, at our front desk. This program is meant to be a self-guided way for adults to learn more about botany, plant identification, and the plant offerings at the Botanical Garden. Let your curiosity lead you deeper into the natural world!
Nature Tots
The fall session of our Nature Tots program continues, and this week our theme is "Trees Are Terrific!" We want to be sure our youngest guests are included in our celebrations this week. Nature Tots is a drop-in program for toddlers and pre-schoolers (with their adult). It happens Friday mornings, 9:00-10:15am and 10:45am-12:00noon. You can find all the information here.
Free Trees for You!
We have a number of coniferous seedlings that are available to visitors at no charge. These include White Pine, White Spruce, and Norway Spruce. The seedlings were provided to us by the Department of Forestry, and our nursery staff have nurtured them to be ready for you to plant. You can find these in our Display Room, or ask the friendly staff at our front desk. These will be available Wednesday-Sunday during our regular open hours, while quantities last.
Shop for Trees
Our FOG volunteers always have an amazing selection of perennials, trees, and shrubs available for purchase at the tables just outside our front entrance. For this week's celebrations they will curate a wonderful variety of trees and shrubs, hardy to our climate and ready to plant and enhance your own green space. Prices vary.
