Deep Roots: Crop Diversity of Newfoundland & Labrador

The Botanical Art Society of Newfoundland & Labrador is pleased to present their latest art exhibit Deep Roots: Crop Diversity of Newfoundland & Labrador. This exhibit will run October 1-31, 2025, and we encourage you to come and visit any time during our regular opening hours. There is no charge to visit the exhibit, which is located in our Conference Room. Many of these beautiful artworks are available for purchase. Please check with Visitor Services at the front desk.

Workshops

Practical Plants | Saturday, October 4, 1:30-3:00pm
Join horticulturist Meg McCarthy for an in-depth tour of the Botanical Garden, exploring the different plants that are used, and have been used in the past, to sustain people in their daily lives. Plants have been used for many purposes: food, textiles, shelter, energy, and medicine. Come enjoy the Garden in the fall and see some of the plants that do all those incredible things for us.
This is a free public event. 

Deep Roots - Local Crops | Sunday, October 5, 10:00am-1:00pm
This adult class is led by artist Margaret Walsh Best. Take this opportunity to relax and get acquainted with a group of local vegetables and choose one to represent using graphite and watercolour. No experience necessary. Art Supplies + crops will be on hand. Come along to enjoy the process.
This is a hands-on workshop with demonstrations using graphite and watercolour. Supplies are provided, but feel free to bring extras if you wish (e.g., coloured pencils, pigma felt pens, etc.)
Worshop Fee: $20

Painting a Crab Apple | Saturday, October 11, 10:00am-1:00pm
This event is open to artists ages 9 to 90.
Join botanical artist Glynn Bishop in a drawing and watercolour workshop, “Painting a Crab Apple.” You will be guided through the different steps it takes to create a life-like crab apple on paper.
Please bring your own drawing and watercolour painting supplies. Drawing paper and 140lb hot pressed watercolour paper will be supplied.
Workshop Fee: $10

Fall Foraging | Sunday, October 12, 2:00-3:30pm
Come join forager and wild crafter Shawn Dawson for this talk about Fall Foraging and its bounty. Learn what is in season and some tips on how to preserve the harvest.

Each week two of our featured artists will lead a guided tour of the exhibit. Guests can use this opportunity to ask questions and learn about the artists' process and the project.
