Undergraduate Brass Audition Guidelines

Applicants whose repertoire features piano accompaniment are required to perform their auditions with a collaborative pianist. If you are unable to perform with a collaborative pianist, contact us to discuss an accommodation.

TRUMPET

  1. Repertoire
    1. Two contrasting pieces (which could include single movements from larger works) that allow you to showcase your musical and technical development. At least one of these must be in a Western classical style and at least one should include piano or other accompanying instrument.
  2. Technical Requirements (trumpet in Bb)
    1. G major scale (F concert pitch), one octave, descending only from G4 to G3 (middle G to low G), slurred, in eighth notes at quarter note = 60
    2. Any major scale that demonstrates your comfortable high range, two octaves ascending and descending, tongued, eighth notes at minimum tempo of quarter note = 72
    3. One harmonic minor and one melodic minor scale, different keys, one slurred and one articulated, eighth notes at minimum tempo of quarter note = 72
    4. C chromatic scale, start on low C and ascend two octaves or to your highest playable note, slurred, eighth notes at minimum tempo of quarter note = 96
  3. Sight Reading
    • You will be asked to sight-read a short etude.

HORN

  1. Repertoire

    3. One harmonic minor and one melodic minor scale, different keys, one legato tongue and one articulated, eighth notes at minimum tempo of quarter note =72
    4. Any two-octave chromatic scale, ascending and descending, legato tongue, eighth notes at minimum tempo of quarter note =96
