2021 Concert Series
January 21: Florian Hoefner with Dani Oore | Spontaneous Sounds
Saxophonist and postdoctoral fellow at the International Institute of Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI), Dani Oore joins forces with MUN faculty member Florian Hoefner on piano to bring you an evening of improvised tonal musicand other music. The concert will feature Dani's hallmark saxophone and vocal styles and Florian's inventive piano improvisations.
January 28: Christine Carter with Duo Concertante | Invitation to Dance
Invitation to Dance with Christine Carter and Duo Concertante brings to life evocative and exhilarating music by Stravinsky and Patrick Cardy in dance-inspired trios. With seductive tangos, beautiful waltzes, and earthy ragtimes, we'll understand if you can't sit still for the concert! Gian Carlo Menotti's lighthearted and rarely-performed Trio completes the program.
February 4: Jing Xia & Friends
In 2015, Jing Xia came to St. John's with her guzheng, a Chinese traditional instrument with a history of more than 2,500 years. Together with a group of fantastic local musicians she will tell her intercultural journey in Canada through a concert of terrific musical combinations ranging from Chinese traditional folks tunes, contemporary fusion compositions to experimental improv and more!
February 11: Kristina Szutor, Tim Steeves and Ian Sutherland| Sonatafest
An evening of classical and 20th Century masterpieces in sonata form for the piano presented by Dean Sutherland and faculty members Timothy Steeves and Kristina Szutor.
CANCELLED February 25: Kate Read with Tim Steeves | Keep in Touch
Keep in Touch, subtitled "Three Missed Calls for Holy Week", addresses "inbetweenness", isolation and miscommunication. David Jaeger, a wonderful communicator, describes his 2018 Sonata as a "unique effort in my canon." To accompany these two NL premieres Kate and Tim will resurrect Bach's G Major Gamba Sonata.
March 4: Faculty Gala
Our most anticipated concert of the year, the Faculty Gala features short performances by some of the School of Music's most celebrated faculty, staff and students. Always fun and full of surprises, this is an evening you won’t want to miss.
CANCELLED March 11: Sylvie Proulx | Tanguissimo; Piazzolla meets Borges
Join us for the 100th anniversary celebration of the birth of legendary musician and composer Astor Piazzolla. The multidisciplinary program features some of his most beloved compositions, as well as anecdotes about the little known collaboration between Piazzola and Borges, one of the most important writers of the 20th Century. Music performed by School of Music faculty and students and special guest Dr. John Turci-Escobar, University of Texas will provide commentary.
CANCELLED March 18: Florian Hoefner | Standard Time
Jazz pianist Florian Hoefner is back for a solo show with a focus on jazz standards. Florian presents reworkings of pieces from the Great American Songbook and his favourite compositions from the Bebop and Post-bop era. Expect to hear pieces by composers such as Cole Porter, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.
CANCELLED March 25: Vernon Regehr | Portraits of Ravel
Cellist Vernon Regehr and Duo Concertante (Nancy Dahn violin, and Timothy Steeves, piano) celebrate the work of Maurice Ravel in this much anticipated concert.
CANCELLED April 1: Iris Trio | Night Music
The Iris Trio (Christine Carter, Molly Carr, and Anna Petrova) join from three corners of North America to present "Night Music." In addition to Chopin's poignant "Nocturne" from Opus 72 (No. 1), the trio will play a selection of Max Bruch's Eight Pieces and a sneak peak of a brand new piece by Florian Hoefner and Don McKay for the ensemble's "Project Earth." For those who remember "Bird Island Suite" from last year's season, this sequel is not to be missed!
