The School of Music at Memorial University
At Memorial University’s School of Music, we empower students to engage with the challenges of a changing world through the study and practice of music. Our world-class faculty, immersive curriculum, and close-knit community provide students with the inspiration and support they need to become the next generation of creators, performers, scholars, educators, and cultural leaders.
Our undergraduate programs prepare students for a wide range of careers within the music industry and beyond. They also provide a strong foundation for further study in a variety of disciplines including law, medicine, business, and the humanities. Our well-funded graduate programs, which include the Master of Music, MA, and PhD, offer opportunities for focused study in performance, pedagogy, conducting, and ethnomusicology.
With 26 full-time faculty, 11 staff, and approximately 200 undergraduate and graduate students, we are big enough that we can offer a diverse array of programs, courses, and ensembles, but small enough that each student receives the individual mentorship they need to flourish.
Acoustically superb concert halls, a cutting-edge digital music lab, well-equipped rehearsal spaces, and excellent libraries facilitate exploration and collaboration, enabling students to nurture their passions and develop their abilities to the full.
The School of Music also functions as one of Atlantic Canada’s premier performance venues, presenting over 100 concerts, masterclasses, and public lectures every year. Our stages and research centers provide students with opportunities to learn from and work alongside renowned artists and scholars from around the world.
The School is situated in St. John’s, NL, a heritage city known for its vibrant cultural life and extraordinary natural beauty. Nestled on the eastern edge of North America, St. John’s is home to numerous local and international festivals representing a wide variety of musical practices and traditions. Through our many partnerships and community-based programs, students deepen their learning, make connections, and gain valuable professional experience.
