TLS connection between Grenfell Campus and the School of Nursing in Corner Brook - Maintenance 8am Wednesday, October 16, 2024
ITS Grenfell Campus will be moving the current TLS connection between Grenfell Campus and the School of Nursing in Corner Brook to a new TLS connection. This work is to start at 8am Wednesday, October 16, 2024. A 15 minute window is scheduled and will cause a brief outage to all MUNET services at the School of Nursing in Corner Brook.

Network maintenance - Paton College and MacPherson College
Network maintenance in Paton College and MacPherson College is planned for Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024 between 4-7 a.m. There will be an outage to MUNet network services in the Paton College buildings and MacPherson College for approximately 15 minutes. This includes the MUNet wired network, @Memorial, @Memorial-Guest, eduroam wireless networks where available and VoIP telephony. This will not impact the @MemorialRES residence network.

Antivirus Upgrade
The OCIO is excited to announce that over the coming weeks, we will be gradually upgrading our antivirus software from Trellix to Microsoft Defender for Endpoint on Memorial-managed Windows devices. This change is part of our continuous efforts to improve your experience and ensure the highest level of security for your system. This upgrade will happen automatically without any intervention on your part.
During this migration, you may notice the following changes:
- The Trellix tray icon (blue/green line) will disappear from your system tray.
- This is an expected part of the transition process. The existing Windows Security icon (white or blue shield) in your system tray will now reflect the status and information about Microsoft Defender for Endpoint.
- You may receive a brief notification about your antivirus software being disabled. This is a normal part of the migration process and your system will not be left unprotected.
Memorial-managed MacOS devices will also transition from Trellix to Microsoft Defender for Endpoint. This process will be more hands-on, requiring our IT staff to personally upgrade your device. If you’re a MacOS user, anticipate direct communication from your IT team regarding this change.

Windows 11 Upgrade
To ensure that university technology is kept up-to-date and secure, the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) is upgrading eligible university computers to Windows 11 starting on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. Not everyone will receive the upgrade at this time as some devices are not compatible with Windows 11. Memorial does have a phased upgrade plan that will see all eligible university computers upgraded to Windows 11.

The Office of the CIO is carrying out network maintenance on Tuesday May 14th 2024 in the Computer Services building. New cybersecurity training available to all faculty and staff
The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) is pleased to announce its new cybersecurity training is now available to all faculty and staff.
The education sector is a prime target for threat actors due to the large volumes of personal data, intellectual property and other data assets handled by educational institutions. As we see the increasingly sophisticated phishing and social engineering attacks, this training will help employees become Memorial's greatest line of defense with regards to cybersecurity.
The training modules cover a variety of subjects that are relevant both professionally and personally, including information security, phishing, malware, ransomware and incident reporting. Modules are short, focused and informative.
The full course takes approximately 45 minutes to complete, but you do not need to complete it all in one session. A certificate will be issued upon successful completion with a minimum score of 80%. The course is available to employees through the my.mun.ca portal under the employees tab. Employees can sign in using their Memorial login ID and password.

Maintenance on the Authentication System Supporting Wi-Fi and VPN
On Wednesday, Feb. 7, from 12:01-2 a.m., the Office of the Chief Information Officer will be carrying out maintenance on the authentication system supporting Wi-Fi and VPN. During this time, access to the @Memorial, @Memorial-Guest, eduroam and @Memorial-Teleworker Wi-Fi networks, as well as VPN, may be unavailable. Once maintenance has been completed you may be prompted to accept a new server certificate the next time your device connects to Wi-Fi. You can be assured that a prompt to accept a certificate from ise-n.mun.ca or ise-s.mun.ca is safe. Due to the nature of this upgrade, some devices may fail to reconnect without manual intervention, so it is advised to check that your device has reconnected once maintenance is complete. If you experience problems connecting, it is recommended to forget the Wi-Fi network on your device and attempt to rejoin. This maintenance will impact Wi-Fi connectivity to the previously mentioned networks at all campuses and sites in the greater St. John’s area, Grenfell Campus, Harlow Campus and the Labrador Campus. Additionally, eduroam access for users from these campuses and sites will be impacted globally. The MemorialRES and @MemorialRES-Guest networks will not be affected. Ten-digit dialing coming to the province
Starting April 1, 2023, local 10-digit dialing will be introduced in Newfoundland and Labrador. Residents will be required to dial 10 digits including the area code followed by the seven-digit phone number for all local calls.
This change impacts all phone users in the province not just at the university; however, this update impacts external calling only. Internal university calls will continue to just require four-digits.
Transition period
There is a transition period between April 1 and May 31. When the 10-digit calling is adopted on April 1, callers who dial 7-digits will hear a recording from the university service provider with a reminder to use 10-digits when dialing.
Hatcher House MUNet Network maintenance 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday April 1st 2023

Webmail issue at Memorial University December 21, 2022
We are currently experiencing issues with the Webmail system. Mail delivery is having issues, resulting in clients seeing problems both sending and receiving email in that system. ITS is troubleshooting and will provide an update ASAP.

Google recently announced that new storage limits for Google Workspace for Education (formerly known as G Suite for Education) will take effect in December 2022. Currently, you have unlimited storage for Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. In order to prepare, we need you to review your current storage usage and delete any unnecessary files in drive, Gmail and photos.

Rebranded McAfee Software Updates
Over the coming days, ITS will be deploying an upgrade to the McAfee Antivirus software installed on Windows-based computers on St. John's campus.
In this update, the “McAfee Agent” component has been rebranded “Trellix Agent”, given the recent merger of McAfee's business division and former security firm FireEye to create the new company Trellix. As a result of this rebranding, clients will notice the icon in the Windows system tray changing from the traditional red McAfee shield to the new blue Trellix logo. Rebranding of the MacOS agent and other components will follow at a later date. Please see the image below for the logo changes.

VPN unavailable for St. John's Campus August 15, 2022
Due to a widespread issue with the Office of the Chief Information Officer’s vendor supplied service, VPN is currently unavailable for St. John’s Campus users. The vendor is working to resolve the issue. Updates will be provided as they become available.
Upgrades to the Telephone System August 15th - August 19th
During the period of August 15 to 19 ITS will be performing upgrades to the telephone system servicing the St. John’s and Signal Hill campuses, as well as off campus sites in the St. John’s area. This work will not affect telephone services at the Marine Institute, Grenfell Campus, Labrador Campus or Harlow Campus. As a result there will be short interruptions to telephone services occurring outside of regular business hours affecting VoIP telephone and analog services. These interruptions may also result in the reboot of VoIP telephones and/or loss of call history on VoIP telephones. Changes coming to Microsoft Office on personal devices
ITS updated Memorial’s Microsoft environment during May 3 – 4, 2022 and anyone who has downloaded Microsoft Office on their personal device are required to complete the following steps
Scheduled Power Outage and Data Centre Shutdown
Facilities Management (FM) is coordinating a planned power outage on Friday, April 29, 2022, from 6 p.m. to midnight (six hours).
These buildings will close during the outage due to building life safety systems being on emergency power only.:
- Henrietta Harvey
- Arts and Administration Building (original portion of the building only, the extension is NOT included)
- Tunnels (Phys. Ed. to Arts and Administration and Science to Arts and Administration to Henrietta Harvey)
Building occupants are advised to shut down all computer equipment prior to these outages.
The outage allows FM to perform critical electrical upgrades.
Information Technology (IT) impacts
The power outage requires the complete shutdown of the Henrietta Harvey St. John’s campus data centre and the IT impacts are not limited solely to affected buildings. The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) is prioritizing services to minimize the impact of the outage to the university community. The outage will impact some services beginning April 28.

Planned Wi-Fi and VPN Outage, February 15th
On Tuesday February 15 from 5:00 AM to 7:00AM, ITS will perform maintenance on the authentication system supporting Wi-Fi and VPN. During this time access to the @Memorial, @Memorial-Guest and eduroam networks as well as VPN may be unavailable.
Once the maintenance is completed you may be prompted to accept a new server certificate the next time your device connects to Wi-Fi. You can be assured that a prompt to accept a certificate from ise-n.mun.ca or ise-s.mun.ca is safe. Due to the nature of this upgrade, some devices may fail to reconnect without manual intervention, so it is advised to check your device has reconnected once maintenance is complete.
If you experience problems connecting it is recommended to forget the Wi-Fi network on your device and attempt to rejoin. This upgrade will impact Wi-Fi connectivity to the previously mentioned networks at all campuses and sites in the greater St. John’s area, Harlow Campus and the Labrador Institute. Additionally, eduroam access for users from these campuses and sites will be impacted globally. Wi-Fi connectivity at Grenfell Campus, as well as the @MemorialRES, @MemorialRES-Guest and @Memorial-Teleworker networks will not be affected.

Upgrade to Memorial's VPN service
Information Technology Services (ITS) has begun the process to upgrade Memorial’s VPN remote access services. The next phase of this is moving to a modernized two-factor login for those who access VPN using connect.mun.ca. ITS is reminding these VPN users to follow directions that were recently sent by email to install a new app, which will push notifications to phones versus the historical SMS codes that are texted to phones. The existing service will stop functioning on April 5, so immediate action is required to ensure no interruption of service. 2-Factor VPN Certificate Update - Friday July 10, 2020

Upgrades to the Meraki Teleworker system on Thursday 3rd July and Sunday 5th July 2020
ITS is carrying out upgrades the Cisco Meraki teleworker system. If you are working from home using a Meraki Z3 device, there will be a brief outage to MUN services while your equipment upgrades and reboots. The upgrades are scheduled for the following times: • 11 pm on Thursday 2nd July 2020. • Midnight to Sunday 2 am Sunday 5th July 2020 Connectivity will return automatically after the upgrade. 30 minute network connectivity outage between St. John's Campus and other campuses and offices 2:30 to 6:30 am Wednesday 8th July 2020.
On Wednesday 8th July 2020, Bell Aliant will be carrying out an upgrade to their network which links St. John’s campus to the following campuses and offices:
• 95 Bonaventure Ave
• Battery Facility
• Botanical Gardens
• Grenfell Campus
• Johnson Geo Centre
• Labrador Institute
• Marine Institute
• Mt. Scio and Vivarium
• Ocean Sciences Centre
• Tiffany Court
• Southcott Hall/Miller Centre
Between 2:30 am and 6:30 am there will be a 30 minute interruption to all network traffic between these sites. Depending on the location, this may impact internet access, remote access to computers using Remote Desktop, access to internal IT services, building wireless, and VoIP telephone use. Connectivity will return automatically after the work is completed, and there is no need to shut down equipment.

Network outage in north part of University Centre 6:30 am - 7 am Tuesday 16th June 2020
Work is being carried out to the electrical system in the north building of the UC on Tuesday 16th June 2020. This will cause an outage to the MUNet data network on the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th floors between 6:30 am and 7 am. During this time the wireless and wired data network (including internet and remote desktop access), and the VoIP telephone system will be unavailable. Connectivity will return automatically so there is no need to power down computers. The network in the Bookstore, and the south part of the UC building will not be affected. ITS is carrying out a network upgrade in the MacPherson residence building on Monday 1st June 2020. Between 9 am and 5 pm there will be outages to the MUN network. ITS is carrying out network maintenance on the morning of Thursday March 19th. Between 00:00 and 03:30hrs there will be a 30 minute outage to the Cisco Anyconnect VPN service at midnight, and again at 01:00 or 01:30. VoIP caller ID changes - November 1, 2019
On Friday, November 1st 2019, new CRTC regulation will come into effect that require the caller ID for all calls to display a legitimate number. To be compliant with this regulation, all calls originating from MUN phones must now display a legitimate ‘864’ number. This will result in calls that were previously displaying non-MUN numbers, such as ‘0000000’, to now be displayed as ‘864-8000’, MUN’s main switchboard number. Network upgrades in Facilities Management building 6pm to midnight Thursday 1st August.
ITS is upgrading the network equipment in the Facilities Management building on the 1st August. Starting at 6pm (and 7:30pm for the some offices) there will be prolonged outages to the wired and wireless network in the building. This includes assess to the internet, email, and the use of VoIP telephones. Service should be restored by midnight, with the majority of the network restored well before that time. OSC network upgrade 10am Friday 12th July 2019
On Friday 12th July, ITS will be carrying out network upgrades in all buildings in the Ocean Science Centre. Starting at 10am there will be network outages affecting wired, wireless, VoIP telephones, internet access, and all other network services. Most buildings will experience an approximately 30 minute to 2 hour outage. The OSC ‘main building’ will experience an approximately 4 hour outage. Network services will be returned to normal before the end of the working day

Required maintenance on the VoIP and Wireless systems
ITS will be performing required maintenance on the VoIP and Wireless systems Tuesday, July 2nd between 5:00 and 7:00 AM and Wednesday, July 3rd between 12:00 and 2:00 AM. This maintenance may result in a very brief disruption to phones and wireless devices during the specified times. Network upgrade in AQ FH and PE on Tuesday night
On Tuesday 2nd July, ITS will be carrying out network maintenance in the Physical Education, Field House, and Aquarena buildings. Work will start at 10pm in PhysEd, and 11pm in the other buildings. MUNMobile scheduled maintenance - June 13th, 9AM-11AM
IT Services has scheduled an outage for MUNmobile on Thursday, June 13th, 2019 from 9:00AM – 11:00 AM to perform required maintenance. During this outage, users will not be able to log in to the MUN mobile app.

ITS Network Maintenance - MUN-FS May 3-4, 2019
ITS will be performing maintenance on the shared Data Storage System (MUN-fs) on Friday May 3, and continuing into Saturday May 4, 2019. Work will start at 5:30 PM on Friday.
ITS requests all clients log off their computer prior to 5:30 p.m. Friday and remain logged off during the migration period. This maintenance is required to replace the system backend infrastructure. The file system services are expected to be back online by end-of-day Saturday.
During this time, your desktop may not be visible, and documents and email may not be available.

VoIP maintenance telephone system - May 1, 12AM-2AM
Maintenance will be performed on the St. John’s campus VoIP telephone system during the hours of 12:00 AM and 2:00 AM, May 1st. Major IT outage on April 30, 2019
IT Services (ITS) has scheduled a major service outage to perform required maintenance on MUN login and other related services on Tuesday, April 30, from 6-8 a.m. During this outage, users will not be able to log in to any services that use MUN login authentication including, but not limited to, my.mun.ca, Brightspace, Romeo, etc. Additionally, www.mun.ca will not be available during this outage. ITS understands the outage affects many users, however, this maintenance is critical and we anticipate the timing between semesters will minimize the impact. Windows 7 support to end in 2020 (Windows 10 Updates)

CANARIE upgrade issues - Mar. 19th, 2019 (RESOLVED)
ITS is aware that some websites have become inaccessible following an upgrade by CANARIE this morning. The websites are hosted in some of the institutions connected to the CANARIE network via ACORN-NL. ITS are working with CANARIE to investigate the cause of the issue.
Maintenance for the Voyager File System
ITS will be performing maintenance to the Voyager File System beginning 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 8, and continuing into Saturday, March 9. The maintenance requires users be logged off during the migration period as we are replacing the system backend infrastructure. New online application system launched
The Department of Human Resources is pleased to announce the launch of MyCareer@MUN, Memorial’s new online application system. MyCareer@MUN replaces Apply Online and manual application processes. With this launch, all applications will now be submitted electronically.
