Student Assistants - Job Descriptions

Student Assistants in the School of Music carry out a wide variety of tasks, most of which are related to concert performances. If you are interested in working as a student assistant, you can choose the areas of responsibility that suit you. The four basic jobs are described below.

Box Office Clerk

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Sell tickets and merchandice for performances in D. F. Cook Recital Hall and Suncor Energy Hall using a cash register and Moneris System.
  • Maintain accurate records, keep track of cash, cheques and tickets.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

TRAINING

Usher

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Take tickets on admission to concerts, be a friendly face for the School of Music for inquiries, to admit latecomers and, in case of emergency, to assist in exiting the hall.

  • Personable but authoritative disposition
  • Keep a clear head in the case of emergencies
  • Responsible

Stage Hand/Stage Manager

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Manage the preparation of the stage for performance, handle stage changes, assist the sound technician in the set up and break down of the PA system
  • Operate the lighting board.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Familiar with all stage equipment including lights, acoustic shell, acoustic banners, risers, moving the organ and pianos.
  • Capable of planning stage changes, and executing them in a professional manner.
  • Be aware of safety at all times
  • Good communication and concentration skills

TRAINING

  • Operating and setting the lighting board
  • Moving the piano
  • Planning your stage changes
  • PA set up basics
  • Moving the shell and risers without injuring yourself
  • Operating the acoustic banners

A/V Technician

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Record performances using audio and video equipment available
  • Operate house PA system
  • Set up projection systems and operate
  • Assist in operation of video conferencing equipment

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Interest in sound recording and video recording
  • Ability to pick up technical processes and equipment
  • Attention to detail and safety
  • Capable of meeting deadlines and seeing a project through from start to finish.
  • Capable of working under pressure

TRAINING

  • Audio/Video recording/editing software (ProTools, Logic, Final Cut, Adobe Premier)
  • Hardware – Digital Mixers, Analog Mixers, Speaker Systems, Outboard Gear, Interfaces, Microphones.
  • Techniques (mixing, live PA, choosing a microphone)
  • Lighting board
