Undergraduate Percussion Audition Guidelines
Repertoire:
- Three pieces, etudes or movements, representing the following instrument categories:
- Snare Drum
- Mallets (xylophone, marimba, bells, or vibraphone)
- Timpani, or a second snare piece, or a second mallet piece
- Suggested level of difficulty (these are examples):
- Snare:
- Rudimental
- Schinstine: Any solo from Adventures in Solo Drumming (Southern Music Company)
- Trad: Downfall of Paris (Ludwig)
- Trad: Connecticut Halftime (Ludwig)
- Concert
- Cirone: Any solo from Portraits in Rhythm (Belwin)
- Delécluse: Any solo from Douze Études pour Caisse-Claire (Alphonse Leduc)
- Mallets:
- Bach: Concerto in A minor, Mvt. 1 or 3 (from Goldenberg: Modern School for Xylophone - Hal Leonard
- Bach: Partita in E - Preludio
- Handel: Any Sonata movement
- G.H. Green: Any xylophone rag (Meredith Music)
- Burton: 6 Unaccompanied Solos for Vibes (Creative)
- Abe: Any solo or etude (Studio 4 Productions)
- Musser: Any etude (Studio 4 Productions)
- Timpani:
- Whaley: Musical Studies for the Intermediate Timpanist (J.R. Publications)
- Firth: The Solo Timpanist, Vol. I (Fischer) (2, 3, & 4 timp)
- Delécluse: Vingt Études pour Timbales (Alphonse Leduc)
- Mitchell Peters: Fundamental Method for Timpani - any etudes (Alfred)
- Beck: Sonata for Timpani (Boston Music Co.)
- Goodman: Introduction & Allegro (3 timp) (Belwin)
Technical Requirements:
- Snare: NARD 13 Essential Rudiments
- Mallets: Major and melodic minor scales through four sharps and flats
- Timpani: Staccato stroke, legato stroke, roll (all dynamics)
Sight Reading:
- To include exercises in snare, mallets and timpani.
