Expenses and Funding

The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) offers baseline fellowships for students in the Ethnomusicology Degree Program. Eligible students admitted to the program will receive fellowship support sufficient to cover full tuition plus a stipend. Ethnomusicology students are also eligible to compete for fellowships and awards that are open to graduate students across the university. Students are encouraged to apply for external funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (www.sshrc.ca) and the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (https://vanier.gc.ca). Students receive significant faculty support during the grant-writing process.

SGS has compiled a handy summary of minimum expenses for graduate students.

Graduate research assistantships are available with the Research Centre for the Study of Music, Media, and Place (MMaP). A limited number of graduate teaching assistantships are also available.

Ethnomusicology students may apply for funding to present at conferences through the ICTM Legacy Fund, which is administered by the School of Music, as well as conference travel funding through the Graduate Student Union and the School of Graduate Studies.

For fieldwork expenses, ethnomusicology students may apply to the School of Music for the Ethnomusicology Fieldwork Scholarship. They may also be eligible to apply for grants from Memorial’s Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) and its J.R. Smallwood Foundation.
