Research Statement
My MA project focuses on the settlements of French fishing communities on the southwest coast of Newfoundland and their evolution (abandonment, reoccupation) following the Treaty of Utrecht (1713) until the end of the French regime (1763). The study consists firstly in forming a GIS database of known French settlements between Placentia and Cape la Hune, based primarily on the surveys of William Taverner (1680-1768), a contemporary of the period under study, who was a settler, sailor and land surveyor. Secondly, a field survey of some of these sites will be carried out to document, where appropriate, the continuity of French occupation. Thirdly, drawing on existing data, the study will examine the impact of climate change, especially the threat from erosion, on these settlements.
