Research Statement

My proposed research is focused on the 16th-to-18th-century French “Chapeau Rouge” fishery in southern Newfoundland. The historical record concerning most French sites involved in the Chapeau Rouge fishery is generally limited, but it does indicate the presence of several large communities on the south coast that have seen little to no archaeological attention. My project aims to document the archaeological remains of targeted sites and analyse any material culture recovered. I will also be monitoring the effects of shoreline erosion on at-risk archaeological contexts using drone-based photogrammetry. This will allow for a more complete understanding of the extent of the French fishery in southern Newfoundland, as well its interconnectedness with the rest of the early modern French Atlantic. Additionally, this project aims to serve as an introduction to community-based historical archaeology in southern Newfoundland, which has seen relatively little archaeological attention to this point.
