Social Accountability Office
Social Accountability is embedded as a core mandate in Destination Excellence, the Faculty of Medicine’s strategic plan (2018-23). This office was officially established in 2020, but much of its work has been going on for a far longer time.
Many faculty and staff across the Faculty of Medicine have been long engaged as leaders and collaborators in various committees, task forces, research groups and other initiatives within the Faculty of Medicine, the wider university and in professional and community-based organizations. Their focus has been on health equity, social determinants of health, and Indigenous perspectives in medical education; global health and cultural safety; health education in international contexts; pathways to health professional education for learners from Indigenous communities, rural areas, and low income families; and promoting equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism in how the Faculty of Medicine does its work.
Two of its current core activities are the Indigenous Health Initiative and the Global Health and Health Equity Program.
The Social Accountability Office’s administrative and physical home is within the Division of Population Health and Applied Health Sciences, but its mandate cuts across the entire Faculty of Medicine. We are here to work with every academic and administrative unit, faculty, staff or learner group, to develop, refine and implement programs, policies, and processes in order to better meet the needs of all the communities that the Faculty of Medicine is committed to serving.
