SELECTION CRITERIA

We look for candidates who demonstrate an interest in and enthusiasm for working with underserved populations, either in their undergraduate or postgraduate training in medicine through volunteer work, electives, research experience, as well as through their experiential background. Postgraduate medical residency training experiences practicing in rural and/or remote communities are also explored and contribute to our selection.

Applicants submit a personal letter and curriculum vitae (CV) which should articulate: the candidate’s interest and past clinical/experiential/volunteer experiences working with underserved populations and advocacy; their experience working in a team; and their plans for their future career and how enhanced skills training and mentorship in this area will further support their goals.

Three reference letters are required and should speak to the candidate’s commitment and interest in care of underserved populations and interest in advocacy. Referees should also be able to comment on the candidate’s problem solving and patient clinical management skills, their communication skills and ability to adapt to varying clinical settings (including remote and/or rural settings), how well they work in a team, and the candidate’s overall professionalism.

Candidates who meet the selection criteria will then undergo an interview with a panel that includes the program director and various faculty working with different parts of the CUP program. Preference will be given to candidates who are recent graduates.
