Friends of the Garden Volunteers

The Friends of the Garden (FOG) are active volunteers who support the botanical, horticultural, and environmental objectives of the Memorial University Botanical Garden. Volunteers have assisted the Garden since its inception in 1971. The Friends officially formed in 1978, and in 1985 the organization incorporated and became a registered Canadian charity. Its legal name is "Friends of MUN Botanical Garden Inc." but the organization is affectionately known as "the Friends," "FOG," or "Friends of the Garden."

As of April 1, 2017, and in support of the Garden’s strategic plan, new and renewing FOG memberships are only offered to individuals interested in volunteering for events, groups, tasks and activities organized by FOG and/or the Garden.

Individuals interested in supporting either the Garden or FOG without volunteering are encouraged to purchase one of the Garden’s Season Passes.

Individuals interested in volunteering can do so by joining a FOG Group (i.e. Board, Horticultural, or Carpentry) or by volunteering for events, tasks, and activities organized by FOG (e.g. Spring Clean-up of the Garden’s paths; Mt. Scio roadside clean-up) or the Garden (e.g. Visitor Services/Front Desk; Library).

There are lots of different types of volunteer opportunities on offer! Those who enjoy walking in nature might enjoy volunteering for the Garden’s Trail Patrol, while those who like to interact with the public will enjoy helping with annual events such as Twilight Thursday, and/or the Merry & Bright Light Festival.
