Invest in your future
Is a university degree right for you?
It’s a big question, and an important one. Deciding whether a university degree is right for you means thinking about your goals, your interests and the kind of future you want to build.
A university education offers more than just a credential. It’s an opportunity to explore ideas that challenge you, develop valuable skills like critical thinking, communication and problem-solving and deepen your understanding of the subjects you’re passionate about.
Deciding if university is right for you starts with understanding what it can offer.
What is a university degree?
A university degree is an academic credential you earn by completing a program of study at a university. Most students begin with a bachelor’s degree, which typically takes four years of full-time study. Many programs offer part-time or online options, allowing you to balance your studies with work or other commitments.
After your bachelor’s degree, you may choose to continue your studies with a master’s or doctoral degree. University programs often combine classroom learning with hands-on experiences, such as labs, internships, co-op placements, and research projects.
Along the way, you’ll gain knowledge, connections and real-world skills that can open doors to a wide range of careers.
What are some of the benefits of a university degree?
Prepare you for specialized careers
Many university programs offer internships and co-operative education learning opportunities that connect you to your field. You’ll gain the specialized knowledge, practical skills and professional credentials that many careers require, building a strong foundation for advancement and lifelong learning.
Improve your earning potential
A bachelor’s degree can boost your income-earning potential. Statistics Canada reports that bachelor’s degree graduates earn, on average, $500,000 more over 15 years compared with high school diploma holders. Universities Canada notes that degree holders earn 24% more than the national average.
Access better career opportunities
A degree opens doors to more employment opportunities and rewarding careers, providing better opportunities for promotions and immediate hire within companies and organizations. Since 2015, the number of jobs requiring a bachelor’s degree has increased by 115% (Universities Canada). Three years after graduation, 91% of bachelor’s graduates are employed full-time, and 83% are satisfied with their jobs (Statistics Canada).
Enhance your wellbeing and future
Benefits extend beyond work. Statistics Canada suggests that higher education is linked to longer life expectancy and improved health. University degree holders are also more likely to vote and have greater involvement in their retirement planning, creating lasting advantages for themselves and future generations.
Build a strong network
University is just about classes. You’ll meet faculty members, students and mentors, and through volunteering, internships and other experiential learning opportunities, you’ll connect with employers, organizations and community leaders to build a professional network that will help you for the rest of your career. But it’s not all about work. University is also where you’ll find friends, clubs and communities that really get you. For many students, especially those moving away from home, it’s the perfect place to connect with people who share your interests and start building the kind of relationships that stick with you long after graduation.
