French criteria chart

The following charts outline the requirements for first-year courses in French at their respected campus.

St. John's Campus

Native speakers of French and students with near-native fluency will not normally receive credit for courses taken at the first year level in their native language nor will they be allowed to challenge for credit at the first year level. Consult the with the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures to be placed at the appropriate level.

If you meet the following criteria and are unable to register for French 1500 contact languages@mun.ca for assistance.
This course is appropriate for students with little or no background in French and for students who have completed French 3200.

Permission to register for this course will not be given to students who have completed high school French immersion.
This course is appropriate for students with little or no background in French and for students who completed core French courses in high school.

Permission to register for this course will not be given to students who have completed high school French immersion. 
FREN 1501
Introductory University French II
Introduction à la langue française, niveau universitaire II

This course is open to students who have completed French 1500. It is not appropriate for graduates of French immersion programs.

If you meet the following criteria but are unable to register for French 1501, or have questions about whether you should enroll in 1500 or 1501 please contact languages@mun.ca for assistance.

Students who have completed French 3200 in high school are advised to start at French 1500.

Students who have completed French 3200 and feel that they are prepared for French 1501, should consult with the department at languages@mun.ca.

This course is appropriate for Grade 12 Senior core French students are advised to start at French 1500.

Students who have completed core French in high school and who feel that they are prepared for French 1501 will be permitted to enroll in the course. Students with questions about their level should consult with the department at languages@mun.ca

FREN 1502
Introductory University French III
Introduction à la langue française, niveau universitaire III

This course is open to students who have completed French 1501 with a minimum final grade of 60%.

French 3202 (French immersion)

Students who feel they have equivalent experience and are prepared for the level, should consult the department at languages@mun.ca
Grade 12/ Senior French immersion

FREN 2100
Intermediate French I
Français intermédiaire II

This course is open to students who have completed French 1502 with a minimum grade of 60%.

If you meet the criteria above but are unable to register for French 2100, please contact languages@mun.ca for assistance.
Students who have completed French immersion with exceptionally high grades and feel they are ready to move to second year, should contact the department at languages@mun.ca to discuss options.

Students who achieve a grade of 4 or 5 on the AP French exam are normally well-prepared for French 2100.

Students who have completed IB French.

Students who have completed French immersion with exceptionally high grades and feel they are ready to move to second year, should contact the department to discuss options.

Grade 12/ Senior Secondary core French with a grade of 80% or greater

Graduates of French Immersion programs with less than 80% in their final French course.

Introductory University French III
Introduction à la langue française, niveau universitaire III
French 3200 with a grade of 90% or greater
or
Francais 3202 with a grade of 80% or greater.
Grade 12/ Senior Secondary core French with a grade of at least 90%
or
Grade 12/ Senior Secondary French immersion with a grade of 80% or greater in their final French course.
