Non-credential student requirements
Non-credential admission
Applicants who wish to take one or more Memorial University undergraduate courses without intending to complete a credential program (degree, diploma or certificate) at Memorial, may be considered for admission under the category of non-credential student (formerly called non-degree student). This category is available to Canadian citizens and permanent residents aged 21 or older. Former Memorial students must be in clear academic standing to be considered.
Non-credential students will be subject to the same academic and non-academic regulations as all undergraduate students at Memorial, but will be assigned the last available registration slot. Registration eligibility is subject to course availability and completion of course pre-requisites. You are strongly encouraged to speak with the academic unit offering the course(s) of interest to verify registration eligibility, prior to submitting your application.
Applicants will be requested to provide information on their academic history on the application for admission, but academic documents will not be required. A proof of age document (such as a copy of a passport, birth certificate or driver’s licence) will need to be uploaded to the admissions portal.
If your admission to Memorial is contingent on a third party for funding, employment or other purposes, you are strongly recommended to ensure that the non-credential student category is acceptable to that third party before applying.
Non-credential students are not reviewed for general admission or transfer credit, and will be required to submit a new application for admission if they wish to complete a credential program at a later point in time.
Transitioning from non-credential to general admission
Non-credential students seeking to complete a credential at Memorial will be required to submit a new application in the admissions portal and provide official transcripts from all previous post-secondary institutions attended. Please refer to our submission instructions for more information.
In the first instance, these students will be evaluated based on their academic performance at Memorial, to see if the following requirements are met:
- Successful completion of a minimum of 15 credit hours at Memorial with a minimum cumulative average of 60% or a 65% average on the last 9 credit hours. Among the courses included in the average calculation must be 3 credit hours in a Critical Reading and Writing or Designated Writing course completed at Memorial.
- Applicants who have attended other recognized post-secondary institutions must be in good standing at their previous institution(s).
Applicants who have not completed the requirements outlined above may be considered for general admission under another admission category as applicable.
Applicants for competitive-entry programs may be required to submit additional information or documentation, and must meet all additional admission requirements for the program.
