Personal and professional development

The School of Graduate Studies offers a variety of personal and professional development programs, workshops, information sessions and resources available for all graduate students:

  • The Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) Training for Graduate Students is required for graduate students whose programs or research involve the use of personal health information. The training program highlights privacy protection in health care, and can be completed online. Upon completion of the training module, students will receive a PHIA certificate.
  • The Teaching Skills Enhancement Program (TSEP) is designed to provide an introduction to teaching at the undergraduate level. The program is free of charge and graduate students who successfully complete the program receive a certificate of completion and official transcript notation.
  • The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committee hosts Lunch & Learn sessions once a month, as part of Memorial's EDI initiative. These sessions consist of a panel discussion with audience participation. Lunch is provided and registration is required.
  • Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition where students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance. 3MT challenges students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries and present them concisely to a non-specialist audience.

  • The Graduate Students' Union (GSU) at Memorial University is an organization run for graduate students by graduate students. The Graduate Students' Union has two main functions: 1) to represent and protect the interests of the graduate students at all levels of university governance, and 2) to help enhance the quality of graduate student life at Memorial. Every graduate student at the University becomes a member of the GSU upon registration. For more information about the GSU and services they offer, please visit the GSU website.

  • The Teaching Assistants' Union of Memorial University of Newfoundland (TAUMUN) represents Graduate Assistants, Graduate Research Assistants, and Graduate Teaching Assistants at Memorial. For more information about TAUMUN, the Collective Agreement, and services they offer, please visit the TAUMUN website.
