Field Safety Policy

Field Safety Policy: Ensuring Safe and Valuable Experiences

The Department of Ocean Sciences is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all faculty, staff, and students participating in off-campus field activities related to research or teaching at Memorial University. Our Field Safety Policy is designed to make fieldwork not only safe but also enjoyable, meaningful, and impactful.

What Counts as Field Work?

The terms “field activity” or “field work” are interpreted broadly and encompass a variety of activities, including:

  • Work aboard research vessels or ships
  • Coastal and land-based field studies
  • Activities conducted at field stations such as the Bonne Bay Marine Station

However, activities such as brief visits to ships at the dock are not considered fieldwork. Field trips may range from a few hours to several weeks, depending on the scope and purpose of the activity.

Our Commitment to Safety

We provide clear safety procedures and guidelines to ensure all participants are prepared for the unique challenges of fieldwork. By following these measures, we aim to foster a secure environment where participants can focus on achieving their academic and research goals while enjoying the experience.
