The Dr. Joe Brown Graduate Research Award

The Dr. Joe Brown Graduate Research Award was established to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Joe Brown, a respected professor and researcher at the Ocean Sciences Centre from 1984 to 2005. This award, made possible through generous contributions from his family, friends, colleagues, and students, commemorates Joe's significant contributions to the fields of behavioral ecology of fishes and cold-water aquaculture. Joe was known not only for his exceptional scholarly work but also for his vibrant sense of humor, deep humanity, and unwavering empathy, particularly towards students. His legacy continues to inspire and support the next generation of marine scientists.

Application Process

The award in support of research activities is valued at $3,112.67 for the 2024/2025 scholarship year and is available to a full-time graduate student in the second or subsequent year of study in the areas of aquatic ecology or aquaculture and is valued at a portion of the income from the endowment. Given on the basis of scholarly merit and quality of research, the award will be made by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies upon recommendation from the Head of the Department of Ocean Sciences.

The application should contain:

  1. A current CV
  2. A cover letter to address the commitment of the applicant to research activities.
  3. A letter (or e-mail) of support from the supervisor.
