J. Roger Pearson Graduate Award
The J. Roger Pearson Graduate Award was established by Ocean Learning Partnership Inc. to honor and recognize Mr. J. Roger Pearson, founding director of the Oceans Learning Partnership (OLP). Under Mr. Pearson’s leadership, OLP and Memorial University signed an MOU in 2013 and inaugurated a new experiential learning program for high school students at the Ocean Sciences Centre, the Marine Biodiversity Lab Program, among others, as part of the University’s newly launched outreach and engagement strategy. Mr. Pearson has a long, distinguished record as an educator and innovator. He was instrumental in establishing MI International as an entity to engage the expertise of the Marine Institute in marine education and coastal community development opportunities worldwide. He was previously Head of the School of Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding at the former College of Fisheries. Following his tenure at MI International, Mr. Pearson assumed the key role in numerous education projects internationally as an Education Sector Staff Consultant for the World Bank in the Middle East, North Africa Region.
One or more 60-hour graduate assistantship awards will be granted to full-time graduate students whose focus of study is in marine biology or ocean sciences in the Department of Ocean Sciences at Memorial University. The value and number of awards to be granted annually will be determined by the Head, Department of Ocean Sciences. Recipients must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by the University. The award will be granted by the Associate Vice-President (Academic) and Dean, Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Ocean Sciences.
An application for the J. Roger Pearson Award should include the following:
- A current CV
- A cover letter addressing the commitment of the applicant to outreach and engagement activities
- A letter (or e-mail) of support from the student’s supervisor
