Science in Motion

Science in Motion: All Aboard the Geo Holiday Express!

It's the holidays, and we wanted to do something a little special at Geo. "How can we combine the holiday season with science and learning?" we asked outrselves.

Well the answer came pretty quickly - trains and the science of motion.

There is a lot to learn about trains, their evolution over time, how they move, how their wheels stay on the track, what roles magnetics and friction play, and more. And trains seem to be inextricably linked to the holiday season. Quite a few months later, we are excited to present our newest exhibit to you!

Welcome to Science in Motion!

This exhibit features four different tableaux, including a winter ski hill, a train tree, and 7 model trains. You control the trains by pressing a button. You can also learn about magnets, friction, why train wheels are shaped the way they are, and the circuits that run electric trains through our interactive stations. All this plus a huge LEGO build from our friends at NewfoundLUG, interpretive panels, and a train play table. It's a sight to see!

This special exhibit is included in regular admission and can be found in the former "Our People" exhibit area.

The exhibit is just for the holidays and will be on display only until December 22, 2024. However, we plan to work on it over the next year, expand it, and bring it back even better in December 2025! But for now, don't miss your chance to check this out! You can then say "you were there when ..."
