Dr. Tom Cooper

Dr. Tom Cooper is a Professor in Strategic Management at the Faculty of Business Administration, Memorial University. His research interests include risk management, strategic planning and Indigenous/Aboriginal business.

Tom is Chair of SmartICE – a social enterprise that is an award-winning technological innovation for the North. SmartICE is the world’s first climate change adaptation tool to integrate traditional knowledge of sea ice with advanced data acquisition and remote monitoring technology. As a social enterprise, SmartICE embraces a business model that aims to expand opportunities for economic and social development in northern markets while preserving local cultures and lifestyles.

Tom has specific interests in social innovation and entrepreneurship as it relates to communities. His research approach is focused on a collaborative, participatory research approach that aims to make a difference in the organizations, communities and people. Tom has a Ph.D. in Business from the University of Warwick and, prior to returning to academia, spent seven years with PwC in London, UK as a senior manager in their governance, risk, and compliance consulting group.
