More bike racks planned for St. John's campus

In September, when Memorial’s St. John’s campus once again becomes a hub of activity, travellers to campus will see several new bicycle racks.

Ten new bike racks will be placed around the St. John’s campus this summer in time for the new fall semester.

Memorial’s Sustainability Office, part of Facilities Management, and Campus Enforcement and Patrol are working together on a plan for the new bike racks and their locations.

“The Sustainability Office has been collecting information about cycling on campus for several years, including bike rack types, condition, location and usage, and locations where bikes are currently being parked,” said Toby Row, Memorial’s sustainability co-ordinator. “In the last few months, we have consulted with several cyclists and groups on campus to determine preferred types of racks and suggested locations. We’ve also gathered information from other universities.”

This summer, in addition to the new bike racks, five old racks will be replaced by Facilities Management. Ms. Rowe says the focus for the new racks is to place them in sheltered locations and near buildings without bike racks close by. In addition, some existing racks that are not being used in their current locations may be relocated. The replacement of existing bike racks will be a gradual process over the next few years.

As part of the plan, an online survey will soon be available for cyclists to provide input on proposed new rack locations. Cyclists can also send suggestions to sustain@mun.ca. To view the locations of the current bike racks, please visit here
