Chemistry criteria chart

The following charts outline the requirements for first-year courses in Chemistry at their respected campus.

St. John's Campus

All first year chemistry courses involve problem solving for which mathematics is an essential component. A solid background in mathematics from high school is an important criteria for success in both Chemistry 1010 and Chemistry 1050.

Students with questions regarding registration in first year chemistry courses at the St. John’s campus should contact the Academic Program Officer before registering for a chemistry course.

CourseProvincial StudentsNational and International Students
CHEM 1010 Students with no chemistry background, those having completed Chemistry 2202 only, or those with a grade of less than 65%* in Chemistry 3202 must take this course. Students with no chemistry background, or weak chemistry background or Grade 12 / Senior Secondary Chemistry with a grade of less than 65%* must take this course.
CHEM 1050 Chemistry 3202 with a grade of at least 65%. Grade 12/ Senior Secondary Chemistry with a grade of at least 65%.

 

Grenfell Campus

Students with questions regarding registration in first year chemistry courses at Grenfell Campus should contact Dr. Julie Sircom, jsircom@grenfell.mun.ca, before registering for a chemistry course.

CourseProvincial StudentsNational and International Students
CHEM 1810 Course is intended for students with no previous exposure to chemistry or those who are returning to the subject after some time.
CHEM 1200 Chemistry 3202 with a grade of at least 65% or achieved a grade of at least 80% in Chemistry 2202. Grade 12 Chemistry with a grade of at least 65% or achieved a grade of at least 80% in Grade 11 Chemistry.
Students with a weak background in chemistry may benefit from taking Chemistry 1810 in their first semester and are encouraged to speak with an academic advisor.
