International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma

Required subject areas

Subject area Eligible IB courses
1. English English (Standard or Higher Level)
2. Mathematics* One of the following at the Standard or Higher level:
  • Mathematics: analysis and approaches
  • Mathematics: applications and interpretation
3. Laboratory Science* One of the following at the standard or higher level:
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics 
4. Social Studies or Modern/Classical Langauge (MCL)* One of the following at the standard or higher level:
  • Economics
  • Geography
  • Global Politics
  • History
  • Philosophy
  • Social and Cultural Anthropology
  • World Religions
  • any language acquisition course
5. Elective Any subject area (Standard or Higher Level)

*Students who are missing an eligible course in one of subject groups 2, 3 or 4, who apply for admission to a program that does not require completion of these courses, will be considered for general admission. In this case, an eligible course in subject groups 1, 2, 3 or 4 may be used to substitute the missing course. Students who are missing eligible courses in two subject areas should contact admissions@mun.ca.

General admission criteria

Grade requirement
  • Minimum score of 24 on the IB Diploma with completion of the required subject areas or completion of another recognized High School diploma program. Refer to your country’s specific requirements for more information.
English language proficiency
  • Proof of English language proficiency beyond diploma completion is normally not required, unless the primary language of instruction is in a language other than English. Please refer to the English language requirements for further details. 
  • Applicants who have completed English B as the course used to fulfill the English subject area requirement will be required to demonstrate English language proficiency through a standardized test.
Competitive program entry (if applicable)
  • Admission to some programs is competitive for a limited number of spaces. A higher admission average and/or supplementary information may be required as part of the faculty-specific admissions.

Additional notes

The IB certificate and career programs are not acceptable for admission unless another recognized High School diploma or certificate has been awarded.

Completion of Higher Level (HL) IB subjects with minimum scores may qualify accepted applicants for course-based transfer credit. Completion of Standard Level (SL) IB subjects may qualify accepted applicants for advanced placement in first year subjects. Refer to the transfer credit chart for courses that may be eligible for transfer credit.

  • Final official high school transcript sent by post or courier directly from the school to the Office of the Registrar or final IB results sent electronically directly from the IB Organization. 

If you have completed high school and not attended a post-secondary institution

  • Final high school transcript sent by post or courier directly from the school to the Office of the Registrar or final IB results sent electronically directly from the IB Organization.
  • Official English proficiency test result (if required). See general admission criteria section above.
  • Supplementary information required for competitive-entry programs may be required with your application.
