Dr. Danine Farquharson has prepared some guidelines to help you in writing your proposal for the CGS-D and/or Vanier applications.

Memorial Internal Process and Timeline for 2024-2025
October 2, 2024 (12:00 pm-1:00pm): Information Session for Applicants (Meeting link)
November 6, 2024 (1:00 pm-2:00pm): Virtual Grant Proposal Writing Workshop for CGS-M Applications, offered by the School of Graduate Studies and hosted by Dr. Danine Farquharson.

- Please note that participants need to bring a draft proposal to the workshop.
December 1, 2024 (before 8:00 pm ET): The deadline for CGS M applications is December 1 before 8:00 pm (ET). Complete applications must be submitted by the deadline using the Research Portal. If the deadline falls on a weekend or on a federal holiday, applications must be submitted by the following business day before 8:00 pm (ET).
- Applications are prepared and submitted by the student directly to the agency through the Research Portal. Please refer to the Tri-agency website for application forms and instructions.
- Note: Students applying for CGS-Ms should submit their application for admission to Graduate Studies to support their CGS-M application.
Winter 2025: The Memorial CGS-M committees complete the internal review of applications, and submit recommendations to Tri Councils by March 31, 2025.
April 1, 2025: Offers of awards will be available in the Research Portal as of April 1. Alternate offers may be made up until January 31 of the next calendar year.
- It is your responsibility to regularly check the Research Portal between April 1 and January 31 for the results of the competition.
- For more information on the notification of results, refer to the instructions for completing an application web page.

CGS-M Q&A Sessions
NSERC is hosting the following question and answer sessions for the CGS-M program:
- Thursday, November 7, 2024 / 1-3p.m. ET / English - CIHR and SSHRC staff will join. Click here to join this session

These sessions will be hosted as live Q&A events over Microsoft Teams, and supported by a series of informational videos available on the NSERC YouTube channel. These videos are intended to replace the presentation portion of the NSERC sessions, allowing NSERC and/or tri-agency staff and applicants to engage in a more in-depth and detailed Q&A session. Participants should watch these videos in advance, and come to the Q&A session with specific questions in mind.

July 16, 2024: Information Session for Applicants

September 27, 2024: Deadline for submission of complete CGS-D application packages. Applications are prepared by the student, and submitted to the nominating institution by their internal deadline. Please refer to their website for agency-specific application forms and instructions.
- NSERC: Online system and instructions
- CIHR: ResearchNET and instructions
- SSHRC: Online system and instructions
Mid-October 2024: The Memorial CGS-D committees complete the internal review of applications and submit recommendations to SGS.
October 30, 2024: Notification of successful and unsuccessful applicants. SGS will provide a summary of the feedback from the internal review committee to successful applicants.
November 8, 2024: Final deadline for submission of complete CGS-D application packages. Successful applicants are responsibile for submitting their final applications using the ResearchNet, CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC Portals.
Mid-November 2024: Final checks completed by SGS for successful applications.
November 21, 2024: SGS submits finalized applications to the appropriate Tri-Council.

Vanier Scholarship 2024 Competition

July 9, 2024 (1:00 pm-2:00 pm): Information Session for Applicants

August 26, 2024: Deadline for submission of complete Vanier application packages. Applications are prepared by the student and submitted to the nominating institution by their internal deadline using the ResearchNet application system. SGS will check application packages for completeness and eligibility of applicants.
Late September to early October 2024: The internal review committee completes the internal review of applications, and submits recommendations to SGS.
Early October 2024: Notification of successful and unsuccessful applicants. SGS will provide a summary of the feedback from the internal review committee on the Vanier application to successful applicants.
October 7 to October 18, 2024: Nomination letters drafted by the academic unit heads and reviewed and signed by the signatory.
October 18, 2024 (20:00 EDT): Application submission deadline; Applicants are responsible for submitting their final in ResearchNet using the ResearchNet application system.
Mid-October 2024: Final checks completed by SGS for applications going forward.
October 30, 2024 (20:00 EDT): Application submission deadline; SGS forwards recommended nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat by October 30, 2024 (20:00 Eastern Time).
