My trainees and I develop and use genomic resources (e.g. DNA microarrays, SSH libraries for targeted gene discovery, and EST databases) in studies related to fish health. DNA microarrays are important tools in this work, as they allow a researcher to analyze relative expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously. In my laboratory, experiments involving functional genomics techniques are used to identify and study the key genes involved in biological processes such as reproduction, development, growth, and responses to pathogens and environmental stressors (e.g. heat stress, pollutants). Some of the functional genomics techniques that we utilize include DNA microarray hybridizations, quantitative reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (QPCR), and SSH library construction and characterization.
