International Development Week 2024 #GoForTheGoals
What is IDW?
IDW and SDG might sound a bit like alphabet soup - but it is an important time of year at Memorial University. It serves to celebrate the work that is being done in International Development and our connection to the Sustainable Development Goals.
International Development Week (IDW) is an annual event in Canada designed to highlight the work in which individual associations and organizations are engaged with respect to their role as global citizens.
Memorial's activities are planned in coordination with the over-arching theme developed by Global Affairs Canada and through our affiliation with the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC).
Each year IDW's theme aligns with the United Nation's (UN) Sustainable Development Goals. The activities thus planned for IDW 2022 at Memorial will similarly align with specific goals championed by the UN.

Details: A special event hosted in collaboration with Memorial University's Harlow Campus with CanalAbility, "an award-winning charity dedicated to providing the facilities for people with a wide range of disabilities, health conditions or anyone experiencing disadvantages, to enjoy boating on the river on our specially adapted canal boats."

Description: Join us for a screening of "This Stained Dawn," (trailer) a documentary on the women's resistance movement in Pakistan, followed by a panel discussion. Panelists will include Shazia Ahmad Khan, Judyannet Muchiri, Behak Rueentan, and moderated by Dr. Sobia Sheikh.

Part of Canada’s international education strategy, the Global Skills Opportunity (GSO) is a platform for international collaboration in post-secondary education. It allows participating Canadian institutions to partner with institutions abroad to create mobility opportunities, consolidating a culture of international learning at Canadian Campuses. This session will explore the perspectives of the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, and of a Marine Environmental student, in designing and implementing an innovative and inclusive international mobility.

International students' experience is a huge part of the higher education internationalization mandate. Scholars and practitioners in the field are taking a critical stand on racialized international students' experience with racism in Western educational settings. Commenting on racism in Western academia, Suspitsyna (2021) claimed that "under the guise of cultural difference, racism patrols the boundaries of the academic profession, reinforces white dominance through socialization, and regulates the assignment of merit and value" (p. 59). A study conducted by Buckner et al. (2021) on 62 institutional internationalization strategies from Canada, the USA, and the UK identified that all these documents largely ignore international students' experiences with racism.
In the Leadership Under Fire virtual interview series, CISN brings current and past leaders of IHE to shed light on their experiences - good, bad, and somewhere in between. In the second episode of this series, Ms. Priscillia Tsuasam, (Doctoral Student, Memorial), will interview Danai Bélanger (Director, Student Experiences, MTU);
Rohene Bouajram (Associate Director, IBPOC Initiatives, UBC). Dr. Shetina Jones (AVP of Student Experience, UWindsor) will provide an opening statement. We invite students, faculty, staff, and community members to join us with the intention of deep listening.
To organize this episode, CISN is collaborating with Memorial University’s International Development Week organizing committee and the Doctoral Seminar series of the Faculty of Education and Internationalization of Student Affairs, a CoP of CACUSS.

We invite you to attend a Round Table Discussion on Canada’s progress towards Agenda 2030 in the Room 5M10. A panel of Faculty experts moderated by Dr. Maisam Najafizada will lead what we expect to be a stimulating and interactive conversation on where Canada falls in reaching national targets, what’s still missing and what we need to focus on in the next five years. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Your participation and insights are invaluable to making this event a success. Let's come together to reflect on and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Description: Join us for a special Coffee Club on Friday, February 9th from 3:00-4:30pm in the IO Social Room, CA2002 Global Learning Centre. This week we will be sampling tea from around the world and discussing the significance tea has in our daily lives and from the regions of the world we call home.
