We would like to acknowledge that the lands on which we work and study are situated in the traditional territories of diverse Indigenous groups, and we acknowledge with respect the diverse histories and cultures of the Beothuk, Mi’kmaq, Innu, and Inuit of the province.

C. CULTURAL CONTENT

Cultural appropriation is the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the customs, practices, ideas, etc. of one people or society by members of another and typically more dominant people or society… presenting a particular power dynamic in which members of a dominant culture take elements from a culture of people who have been systematically oppressed by that dominant group.1

Submissions will be reviewed for cultural content and works presenting cultural appropriation will not be accepted.

D. SELECTION CRITERIA and PROCESS

Submissions are selected on a competitive basis:

  • The quality and innovation of the work.
  • Appropriateness to the theme of the journal when applicable.
  • Relevancy to the field of Folklore and/or the scope of Culture & Tradition.
  • Thoroughness and attention to broader journal submission guidelines. Final selections will be subject to overall curatorial cohesiveness.
