SWAAC Conference 2022

Welcome to SWAAC 2022!

Memorial University is delighted to host this annual event and while we had hoped to welcome you in person and show you some Newfoundland and Labrador hospitality, we are grateful to welcome you to join us virtually. We will do everything we can to ensure that our Best Kind theme resonates throughout the conference.

The organizing committee has assembled a provocative and inspirational program which I am sure you will enjoy, with Canada’s leading university administrators, past and present.

- Vianne Timmons, President and Vice Chancellor, Memorial University of Newfoundland

SWAAC 2022 is coming to you virtually from the Emera Exchange at Memorial’s Signal Hill Campus in downtown St. John’s, NL. This unique learning and networking opportunity is available to SWAAC members and non-members alike, wherever you are located and wherever you are in your leadership journey.

Our conference theme, Best Kind, is a colloquial term indicating general approval; in the best state or condition. Through our conference theme we propose aspiring to be best kind with the following session topics:

The Inclusive Campus: Anti-Racism, Intersectionality and the University
The Equitable Campus: COVID and the Equity Gap
The Accessible Campus: Disabilities and the University
The Indigenized Campus: katimak – Gathering Place
The Engaging Campus: Leading with Kindness

We will also explore leadership with keynote speakers of the best kind:

Martha Piper and Indira Sameraskera, authors of Nerve: Lessons on Leadership from Two Women Who Went First

Two former university presidents share their personal and professional stories, offering guidance for women leaders of every age and at every stage of their career. Nerve is must-read for any woman who is leading today, considering leading, or thinking about life after leading. BONUS: Each registrant in the conference will receive a complimentary digital copy.

TA Loeffler, professor, explorer and motivator: Climbing for the Summit: Bringing your Best Kind

“If my only goal as a teacher and mountaineer is the summit, I risk cruel failure if I do not reach the highest apex. Instead, if I accept the mountain’s invitation to journey and create meaning in each step, success is manifest in every moment.”

Participate in thought-provoking and action-oriented presentations, engage with and learn from your peers, and take an important step in your professional and personal development. In addition to the SWAAC AGM, the SWAAC Equity Committee will host a special session:

Advancing Equity in Higher Education – The SWAAC Equity Framework

Recognizing the long-term persistence of significant under representation, SWAAC’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee is committed to supporting the advancement of women, and those who identify as women, in post-secondary institutions in Canada. While progress can be seen in terms of the advancement of women and underrepresented groups, at the most senior levels very little change has materialized over the last two decades. Meaningful progress is dependent upon institutions making explicit and purposeful commitments to support diversity, address intersectionality, and develop the support of allies. This panel will discuss SWAAC’s Equity Framework and the ways it aims to support equitable representation within Canadian post-secondary institutions.

Hear thought-provoking and action-oriented presentations, engage with and learn from your peers, and take an important step in your professional and personal development.
This unique learning and networking opportunity is available to SWAAC members and non-members alike, wherever you are located and wherever you are in your leadership journey.
