Memorial University works closely with the Government of Canada (Global Affairs) and their major scholarship programs:

Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) - focused on Latin (and South) America

Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development – Phase 2 (SEED-2) - for Member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Pacific Island Countries and Mongolia (NOW OPEN for Applications for 2026-2027 Academic Year)

Study in Canada Scholarships - focused on South Asia, Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, Turkiye and Ukraine
In order to participate under these scholarship programs:
- The sending (home) university must have an established relationship with Memorial University (a memorandum of understanding or exchange agreement)
- The receiving (host) institution agrees to waive tuition fees as per the terms of the exchange agreement
- The sending (home) institution formally nominates the student by the appropriate deadlines
- The receiving (host) institution applies on behalf of the student for the scholarship.
If a student is successful in receiving a scholarship, Memorial University will inform the student directly. The funds will be transferred to the student once they arrive in Canada. This means the student is responsible for the upfront costs associated with the experience such as flights and visa expenses.

- Eligibility:
- For students from partner schools from Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos; Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Mexico; Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela.

- Usually a copy of your passport identification page; national identity cards are OK, but a passport will be required for travel if a candidate is selected.

- Letter of full time enrollment
- A letter on letterhead confirming that the student is enrolled full-time AND that they will be returning to full time studies after the exchange. This must be dated within the last six months at the time of submission.
- Letter of support from home (sending) institution
- A letter on letterhead from the home institution - professor, instructor or international office representative.This must be dated within the last six months at the time of submission.
- Signed copy of the MOU or Exchange Agreement (Exchange Agreement is required for course-based exchange)
- (Research Students Only) Letter of Invitation from a Canadian supervisor
- Proof of English proficiency
- This is not a requiremrnt of the scholarship program. However, Memorial University will require students to provide a measure of English proficiency acceptable to the admission team. As a result, a proof of English must be submitted at the time of application. Note, this is not required for graduate research students.
- Course-based students should be familar with faculties and departments at Memorial University that are participating in exchange. More can be found on this here.

- Eligibility:
- Citizens of a country listed below:
- ASEAN Member States: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos (Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR)), Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam;
- Pacific Island Countries: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu;
- Mongolia.
- Enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution in an eligible country.
- Paying tuition fees to that institution at the time of application and for the full duration of their exchange.
- Selected candidates may arrive as early as August 1, 2026 and no later than February 1, 2027. Failure to arrive during this time may result in the cancellation of the scholarship.

- Proof of Citizenship: A copy of the candidate's passport or national identity card with a photo and valid dates
- Privacy Notice Statement (template online)
- Letter of Intent (maximum one page):
- Explains the nature of studies or research to be undertaken
- Provides rationale for study in Canada and for the choice of institution, program and supervisor and how the proposed program of study or research will relate to their future career
- Explains how undertaking study or research in Canada will empower the student to apply their learning to address the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
- Explains how they intend to use their learning to help reduce poverty and narrow the development gap in their region in their future career
- Identifies the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) their proposed study or research in Canada is aligned with and will contribute to (letters that do not identify an SDG will be deemed incomplete and not eligible)
- Candidates from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste or Vietnam must provide an explanation of how their learning in Canada will help to reduce poverty in their home country
- Candidates from Brunei or Singapore must provide an explanation of how their learning in Canada will help to reduce poverty in one of the other nine ASEAN countries
- Candidates from Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu or Vanuatu must provide an explanation of how their learning in Canada will help to reduce poverty in their home country
- Candidates from the Cook Islands must provide an explanation of how their learning in Canada will help to reduce poverty in one of the other thirteen eligible Pacific Island Countries
- Candidates from Mongolia must provide an explanation how their learning in Canada will help to reduce poverty in their home country
- Letter of Full time enrollment:
- On official letterhead
- Dated within the last six months
- Confirms that the candidate is currently enrolled in a full-time program (letters that do not confirm full-time student status will be deemed incomplete and not eligible)
- Copies of transcripts, a student card or a letter of admission are not acceptable
- Letter of Support from Home (sending) Institution:
- On official letterhead
- Dated within the last six months
- From the candidate's instructor, professor or international director
- Explains the nature of study or research to be undertaken in Canada and how the candidate and the home institution will benefit from this scholarship program
- Assesses the candidate’s commitment and capacity to use the program of study or research in Canada to help reduce poverty and narrow the development gap in their country or region
- Letter of invitation from the Canadian supervisor (graduate students only, maximum one page)
- On institutional letterhead
- Dated within the last six months
- Signed by the Canadian supervisor
- Describes the nature and scope of the research collaboration with the student’s home institution
- Confirms their willingness to support and mentor the candidate during the exchange period
- Explains how the Canadian institution, supervisor and peers will benefit from the exchange
- Signed copy of the MOU or Exchange Agreement (Exchange Agreement is required for course-based exchange)
- In addition to direct exchange agreements, Memorial University is part of the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP) Consortium. We welcome SEED Scholarship applications from partners within this network.
- Proof of English proficiency
- This is NOT a requirement of the Scholarship program. However, Memorial University will require students to provide a measure of English proficiency acceptable to the admissions team. Note, this is not required for graduate research students.
