MA Co-operative Work Terms
The M.A. with Public Folklore Co-operative Education Work Terms route is comprised of two main parts: eight courses taken according to the list of requirements on the student’s formal Programme of Study and two paid co-op work placements.
Normally students declare their intention to take the Public Folklore Co-operative Education Work Terms route at the time of application, or no later than September 15 of the first year of their program. The intention to take the second work-term must be declared in writing to the department office and to the designated Academic Staff Member in Co-operative Education no later than September 15th (for winter placement) or January 15th (for spring placement).
Work terms are normally taken in the third semester of the first academic year, and in the first or second semester of the second year. A typical schedule for the student's first year may include two semesters of full-time courses (three in the fall semester and three in the winter semester) followed by the first work placement in the spring semester. A student’s second year will include the second work-term plus the remaining coursework.
Co-op work terms are monitored and evaluated by a professor in the department and by the Academic Staff Member in Co-operative Education for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students are graded on their work term performance and on one or more assignments as outlined in the course syllabus for 601W and 602W.
Students are encouraged to secure work-term placements that offer experience in a range of public and applied folklore settings, and if possible, in different locations, to increase their personal contacts and to build their resumés for future professional employment and consulting.
