Bringing Artificial Intelligence to Language and Culture Preservation

May 12th, 2023

Canadian Indigenous languages are critically endangered. Language revitalization programs, such as the Indigenous Languages Act, need to evolve with technology to halt or reverse the decline of endangered languages. In this talk, novel techniques for developing and utilizing affordable and efficient technologies to aid the revitalization of Indigenous languages are presented. The techniques are based on state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and computer vision advances. The objective of the talk is to initiate interdisciplinary research programs between NSERC - for the technological challenges - and SSHRC - for the linguistics challenges.
