Become a PAL Leader
Join our PAL team!
We're hiring! We're looking for motivated student leaders interested in helping their peers in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Math, Physics, Psychology, and Statistics courses in the Spring and Fall 2026 semesters.
The Academic Success Centre’s Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) program provides academic support for students enrolled in historically challenging courses.
PAL Leaders are undergraduate students who facilitate weekly out-of-class group study sessions in courses they have successfully completed. PAL Leaders will receive training on using effective learning strategies and facilitation techniques to lead PAL sessions that create opportunities for students to collaborate and process challenging course material in targeted courses.
PAL Leaders typically work 8-10 hours per week, including attending lectures in their assigned course, session preparation and facilitation, as well as training and required meetings.
Duties include:
- Attending all lectures in the assigned course (2-4 lectures per week, depending on the course) and recruiting participants for PAL sessions.
- Facilitating two 50-minute sessions per week for students in assigned courses.
- Planning PAL sessions using a variety of strategies learned in the required PAL Leader training to create engaging and inclusive learning experiences.
- Administrative tasks such as submitting session plans, attendance and other documentation on time and as required; maintaining professional communication with course instructors and the Supplemental Instruction Specialist.
- Participating in pre-term training and any required training sessions and/or meetings throughout the semester.
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
- Completed at least one semester prior to the semester of hiring and registered as a full-time student (at least one course in Spring 2026)
- Knowledgeable in the subject matter of the targeted course, determined by a grade of at least 75% and/or instructor referral.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. PAL Leaders must be willing and able to work comfortably with peers and create an encouraging and inclusive learning environment.
- Strong organizational and time management skills. PAL Leaders are expected to model effective study skills and strategies.
- A commitment to helping other students learn and comfort in a leadership role. Previous experience with tutoring, teaching, coaching or other leadership positions would be an asset.
- Be able to flexibly work 8-10 hours per week, including attending lectures in the assigned course and completing any pre-term and in-service training sessions.
