SUBJECT: Newfoundland and Labrador's lieutenant-governor to visit Memorial University's Harlow Campus

DATE: November 5, 2018

The lieutenant-governor of Newfoundland and Labrador will be in the United Kingdom this week and will visit Memorial University’s Harlow Campus as part of her official itinerary.

Judy Foote was installed as Newfoundland and Labrador’s 14th lieutenant-governor since the province joined the Canadian Confederation in 1949. She is also the first woman to hold the position.

Lt.-Gov. Foote is scheduled to arrive at Harlow Campus on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 9:45 a.m. where she will meet staff, Harlow Campus ambassadors and Memorial University education students.

Following that, the lieutenant-governor will tour Harlow Campus, with stops at The Maltings, Cabot House, St. John’s House, Market Street and the surrounding area.

Following lunch, Lt.-Gov. Foote will depart the campus at 2:15 p.m.

Harlow Campus, Essex, is the international campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland, one of only two universities in Canada with campus facilities in the United Kingdom. Students in a variety of degree programs spend a block of time, from a few weeks to a full semester, at Harlow to broaden their academic and cultural horizons and gain invaluable practical experience. The campus opened in 1969.

Memorial University, positioned on the edge of the North Atlantic, is one of the largest universities on Canada’s East Coast. The institution was established in 1925 as a living memorial to the Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who lost their lives on active service during the First World War. It was later rededicated to also encompass the province’s war dead of the Second World War. With more than 18,000 students, as well as 5,000 faculty and staff, representing over 90 countries, Memorial provides a comprehensive range of undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs at five campuses and multiple sites.

Local media are welcome to accompany the lieutenant-governor on her tour of Harlow Campus. She will be available for media interviews following the tour.
