SUBJECT: Memorial University to participate in Innovation Week 2019

Innovative units at Memorial University are participating in Innovation Week 2019 from April 29-May 3.

Innovation Week brings together Newfoundland and Labrador’s business community with youth, public and private partners through a variety of events to highlight, create and accelerate innovation in the province. Sectors as diverse as ocean technology, oil and gas, environment, health care and social enterprise will be featured throughout the week.

Participating from Memorial are C-CORE, the Centre for Social Enterprise (CSE), Genesis and the Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship (MCE) in St. John’s as well as Navigate Small Business and Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook.

Other Innovation Week partners include the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technology Industries (NATI), College of the North Atlantic, Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industry Association (NEIA), Brilliant Labs, Women in Resource Development Corporation, EXCITE Corporation, Association for New Canadians, Bounce Innovation, Stella’s Circle, Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

Events that involve Memorial include:

April 26-27: Social Innovation Challenge
Navigate Small Business and the United Church of Canada will host this two-day, collaborative competition that aims to support people creating social impact in their communities. The challenge will culminate in a pitch competition to help participants start or grow their social enterprises.

April 30: Pitch & Pick
The top start-up companies in Genesis’ Evolution Program will compete for cash prizes in this business pitch competition.
3-5 p.m., Masonic Temple, St. John’s
 
April 30: Mentorship Training – C-Level Executives Only
Genesis Centre, YMCA Enterprise and MCE will provide training and professional development to help prospective mentors develop necessary skills to help potential mentees succeed.
5-8 p.m., Ches Penney Family YMCA (E&Y Boardroom), St. John’s

May 1: Mentorship Training – All Potential Mentors
Genesis Centre, YMCA Enterprise and MCE will provide training and professional development to help prospective mentors develop necessary skills to help potential mentees succeed.

May 2: C-CORE Innovation Update
Discover recent innovative work, including research and development, from C-CORE and its partners around the world.

May 2: Social Enterprise Pop-up
CSE and Metro Business Opportunities will host this pop-up event to showcase local social enterprises and highlight their work addressing social, cultural or environmental challenges as well as demonstrate the diversity of the social enterprise marketplace.
10 a.m.-2 p.m., Avalon Mall, St. John’s
 
May 2: Local Innovation through Natural and Cultural Products
Grenfell Campus researchers will participate in an inspiring half-day seminar, followed by lunch and networking, to discuss a variety of topics including: traditional skills and cottage craft-based businesses, value-added products from local natural resources; and incorporating technology into tradition.

May 2: Functional Foods Sensory Lab Tour
The Functional Foods Sensory Laboratory uses various technologies to examine the health benefits beyond basic nutritional needs of natural or processed foods. It also explores the chemical determinants of consumers’ sensory perceptions of taste, small, texture, colour and more.

May 4: Social Innovation Challenge
This one-day pitch competition focused on social enterprise and community impact provides students and members of the community with the opportunity to compete for start-up funding and other prizes. Hosted by the United Church of Canada in partnership with CSE.
