SUBJECT: Two national music conferences to kick off in the capital city

Two music conferences will bring more than 200 concerts, pop-up performances, presentations, workshops and unique, interactive musical projects to St. John's over seven days starting next week.
From June 27-July 3, events also include an opening gala concert titled Come and I Will Sing You, featuring 15 choirs from Newfoundland and Labrador in performance with the Ennis Sisters; Swedish vocal trio Solala's North American debut; and Nordic Light, Latvia’s composing sensation Eriks Esenvalds's multimedia symphony.
The International Symposium on Singing and Song II and Podium on the Edge: Singing from Sea to Sea to Sea are both being hosted by Memorial University-based The Singing Network.
International Symposium on Singing and Song II
The symposium features a number of keynote speakers, including Stephen Clift (U.K.), whose work looks at the potential of music and the arts to promote the well-being and health of individuals and communities.
Presentations about research and practices and international perspectives associated with singing and song are also part of the event.
A lunchtime dialogue series, Close Encounters of the Musical Kind, is open to the public and sponsored by Memorial’s Office of Public Engagement.
“There’s so much diversity,” said Dr. Andrea Rose, one of the conference organizers and a member of the Faculty of Education. “There’s something for everyone, no matter if your interests lie in performance, folklore, health care or community music-making.”
The symposium will take place from June 27-29 at the School of Music on the St. John’s campus.
Podium on the Edge: Singing from Sea to Sea to Sea
Podium on the Edge is being held in Newfoundland and Labrador for the first time.
The Choral Canada conference and festival runs every two years in different parts of the country. This year, it will bring more than 1,200 participants, including 18 visiting choirs, to St. John’s.
Podium on the Edge offers unique professional development opportunities through master classes, numerous workshops and reading sessions for conductors, choirs and administrators, as well as outstanding performances by Canadian choirs, including the National Youth Choir.
A unique musical project, titled …float… and taking place at the Mount Scio Savoury Farm on Canada Day, features five outstanding Canadian choirs performing exquisite works by a number of composers, including Dr. Andrew Staniland of Memorial’s School of Music.
Podium on the Edge runs June 29-July 3 and will take place primarily at the Sheraton Hotel and various performance venues throughout St. John’s.
The conferences are supported by Memorial’s Faculty of Education, School of Music, Bruneau Centre for Excellence in Choral Music, Office of Public Engagement and Choral Canada.
