SUBJECT: PSA: Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research and Treatment inaugural summit

Media are invited to attend a plenary session of the inaugural summit of the Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research and Treatment (CIPSRT) to be held at Memorial University next week.
The summit is dedicated to first responders, public safety personnel and their families. The public session is sponsored by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association, RCMP, Department of Justice, Public Safety Canada and Wounded Warriors and will officially launch the institute and its efforts to optimize Atlantic region resources to benefit all Canadian public safety personnel.
Speaking at the plenary session will be Dr. R. Nicholas Carleton, scientific director, CIPSRT; Steve Palmer, executive director, CIPSRT; Dr. Rose Ricciardelli, Department of Sociology, Memorial University, and associate director, corrections, CIPSRT; Dr. Heidi Cramm, Queen's University, and associate director, fire, CIPSRT; Dr. Renee MacPhee, Wilfrid Laurier University, and associate director, paramedics, CIPSRT; and Dr. Greg Anderson, Justice Institute of British Columbia, and associate director, police, CIPSRT.
Canadian public safety personnel and their families have unique risks, exposures, and experiences, all of which requires the development of new standards for protection, prevention and care for their mental health and well-being.
The session takes place on Tuesday, July 25, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in room A-1043 of the Arts and Administration building on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus.
The Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research and Treatment is a multi-university team of leading Canadian researchers devoted to improving mental wellness among first responders, other public safety personnel, and their families. The institute is dedicated to developing the tools required to enhance the prevention, intervention, recognition and treatment options for addressing mental health concerns among this work force and those who support them.
