SUBJECT: Ocean education and youth focus of Oceans Innovation 2014

Ocean Innovation 2014: Youth and the Oceans will bring together educators, students, policy-makers and ocean scientists to discuss the challenges and opportunities pertaining to ocean literacy in the current education system.

Organized by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University, this year’s conference will take place Sept.15-19 in St. John’s and Lewisporte, N.L.

The event will see an educators session, youth forum and speaker series take place, among other activities.

On Monday, Sept. 15, the annual Educators Workshop on Ocean Education in the Classroom will focus on how educators can effectively bring ocean-related experiential learning into classrooms in Newfoundland and Labrador. The workshop will focus on enthusiasm, hands-on activities and affordability and take place at the Marine Institute.

The Youth Innovation Forum will take place at the at the Delta Hotel and Convention Centre on Thursday, Sept. 18. The forum will engage junior high students and educators from St. John’s and surrounding areas with internationally recognized ocean experts for discussions and hands-on activities to increase awareness and understanding of ocean education and career opportunities. 

On Friday, Sept. 19, the Ocean Innovation Speaker Series will feature Kevin Hardy, the “Lander Commander” from film director James Cameron’s Deep Sea Challenger Expedition. 

Grade 9 students from Lewisporte, N.L., will be joined by students at Hyattsville Middle School in Washington, D.C., via webcast and interactive video conference for this special event. Mr. Hardy will speak to youth participants about ocean education and career opportunities in the ocean sector.
