SUBJECT: MUNdays keep hearts a-thumpin' on Day 2

DATE: October 24, 2014

On the second day of Memorial University’s week-long fall celebrations, the fun and games continue!

From Oct. 23-28, a full itinerary of spirit week events and activities will bring students, staff, faculty and alumni together to celebrate the university experience at Memorial’s Grenfell campus, the St. John’s campus and the Marine Institute during MUNdays 2014.

On, Friday, Oct. 24, on the St. John’s campus, it’s Kindness Friday, just because it feels good. In addition to acts of individual kindness, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., the university community will participate in the campus-wide Kindness Friday initiative, Fill-the-Square. The aim is to fill the basketball court at Paton College with non-perishable food items to benefit the Campus Food Bank. Full bellies make for happy hearts!

And this afternoon and evening, many class and faculty reunions take place. From on-campus locations to some of the capital city’s most inviting pubs and clubs, hundreds of Memorial alumni will gather to reconnect and reflect on their university years together.

As well, the Sea-Hawks men's volleyball team will rev up their fans when they compete against teams from the Quebec Student Sports Network (RSEQ) and the Atlantic University Sport conferences in an interlock tournament to kick off the 2014-15 volleyball season. Games start on at 6 p.m. at the Field House; Memorial takes on the University of Sherbrooke at 8 p.m. Wear your red and support our home team.

On, Saturday, Oct. 25, the volleyball competition continues at the Field House. The men’s Sea-Hawks play Laval University at 1 p.m. and the University of Montreal at 8 p.m. Red means go!

And, the Barnes House Charity Truck Pull is back! After a brief hiatus, this massive feat of strength happens from 12-5 p.m. in lot 16/16A. This MUNdays crowd pleaser raises money for charity.

Tonight, a party is goin’ on! It’ll be a rockin’ good time at The Breezeway bar in the University Centre as hundreds of alumni and friends kick up their heels at the Super TSC Night Concert. Memories of former concerts and parties held in the revered Thomson Student Centre (TSC) will inspire dancing and celebrating into the wee hours. Hosted by up-and-coming local comedian Matt Wright, the concert features an all-star lineup with performances by Mick Davis, Barry Canning, and Shanneyganock.

On Sunday, Oct. 26, the first ever MUNdays Sunday Skate takes place. Alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends of the university along with their families will head down to the Jack Byrne Arena from 4-5 p.m. for an hour of skating followed by refreshments and munchies. Hearts will be pumping!

Also tonight, the President’s Golden Celebration will see President Gary Kachanoski host a special celebration recognizing alumni celebrating 50 years of graduation from the Parade Street and Elizabeth Avenue campuses. This event is by invitation only for alumni marking 50 years of graduation and their guests.
