SUBJECT: Marine Institute well represented at 2014 Canadian Hydrographic Conference

The Canadian Hydrographic Association will convene for its 2014 Canadian Hydrographic Conference (CHC 2014), in St. John’s April 14-17, 2014, at the Sheraton Hotel.
This event alternates between the United States and Canada and allows the Canadian Hydrographic Service, Science Sector, Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans, to maintain Canada’s profile as a leader in hydrographic and oceanographic operations.
The Canadian Hydrographic Association (CHA) is a non-profit, scientific and technical group of more than 200 members. It is the only national hydrographic organization in Canada. It embraces the disciplines of hydrographic surveying, marine cartography, marine geodesy, offshore exploration as well as tidal and tidal current studies.
The CARIS Scholarship will be presented on Wednesday, April 16, at 10:15 a.m. in the CARIS booth. The scholarship is awarded to a Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University student in the bachelor of technology, ocean mapping program. This year’s recipient is third year ocean mapping student, Daniel Sweeney of Grand Falls-Windsor, N.L.
CARIS software is widely used in the ocean mapping program at the Marine Institute. The scholarship was established to strengthen the partnership between CARIS and the institute.
The high-level technical program for the conference will include discussion on Canadian and U.S. challenges in data mapping, the importance of nearshore hydrographic mapping prior to coastal disasters and challenges with date collection within these environments.
A range of speakers from varying disciplines will be presenting at the conference. Local speakers include representatives from the Marine Institute, Department of Fisheries and Oceans and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. International industry including Esri, CARIS Geospatial Software Solutions, Novatel, Teledyne, Riegl, Jeppesen, Quality Positioning Services Hydrographic and Marine Software Solutions, LRI, Fugro Pelagos and IIC Technology will be in the city for the CHC 2014 conference.
The CHA is formally affiliated with the Canadian Institute of Geomatics. It is informally associated with the Hydrographic Society of America (THSOA).
