SUBJECT: SIFE Memorial team heads to world cup competition

Students from Memorial University will compete for the title of world champions in a business case competition next week.
Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Memorial will represent Canada at the 2012 SIFE World Cup in Washington, D.C. from Sept. 30-Oct. 2. It is the sixth time in seven years that SIFE Memorial will represent Canada in the international student business competition, which this year will bring together more than 3,000 student, academic and business leaders from more than 39 countries. SIFE Memorial won the international competition in 2008 and earned the right to compete again on the world stage by winning the national competition in Calgary, Alta., in May.
“It’s going to a really great experience and we’re excited to share our story with the world,” said Shane Skinner, president of SIFE Memorial and a fifth-year bachelor of commerce (co-op) student. “Obviously we’re hoping to do well in the competition but at the end of the day, we’re already winners because of the real impact we have had on so many lives.”
The 2012 SIFE World Cup is a showcase of the impact that SIFE projects are having on communities around the world. Student teams present on their projects’ results to panels of business leaders serving as judges for the competition. The judging process takes into consideration economic, social and environmental factors to determine which SIFE team best empowers people in need through the application of business and economic concepts and an entrepreneurial approach to community outreach.
SIFE Memorial will present on the results of 13 projects, including those that help former military personnel, persons with disabilities and people who earn a living by collecting recyclables. It’s estimated that SIFE Memorial’s outreach initiatives have involved 19,880 volunteer hours resulting in an economic impact of $1,628,679, creating 64 jobs and affecting 4,212 people.
Prof. Lynn Morrissey, faculty adviser for SIFE Memorial and assistant professor of communications at the Faculty of Business Administration, says the team looks forward to sharing the results of its community projects at the international showcase.
“We make a real impact in our communities, and to be able to share our stories and represent our country on the world stage is truly an honour,” she said. “It’s a testament to the hard work our students put in year-round that we’ve been to the world cup six times in seven years. I’m proud of their achievements.”
