SUBJECT: PSA: Inventing Victorian race subject of public lecture at Memorial University

In his lecture, while emphasizing Victorian aspects of race and racism,
Dr. Patrick Brantlinger will outline the history of these concepts from the Renaissance to the present. He will examine supposedly scientific developments from the Enlightenment through Darwin, from early racial typologies through the emergence of archaeology and anthropology to the eugenics movement.
Dr. Brantlinger is the Ruby Professor Emeritus of English at Indiana University Bloomington, Ind. He is primarily a cultural historian and his research interests include Victorian studies, cultural studies, the history of literacy and reading, aesthetics and post-colonial studies.
The public lecture will be held on Wednesday, June 19, at 7 p.m. at Suncor Energy Hall, School of Music, St. John’s campus. Parking is available in lot 15A.
