SUBJECT: PSA: Celebrating the role of youth and marine environmental activity in Newfoundland and Labrador

The first event in the 2013 Marine Institute Ocean Net Youth and the Oceans conference series will be held in Marystown on Thursday, March 21.
The event will take place at the Marystown Hotel from 9:30 a.m.-2:15 p.m. Members of the media are invited to attend.
The theme of the year’s conference is Making a Difference Starts Here. Holy Name of Mary Academy’s Eco-Kids will be leading an environmental scavenger hunt as part of the event. Eco-Kids is a group of young environmental champions from the community of Lawn on the Burin Penninsula.
The Ocean Net Youth and the Oceans conference celebrates the role of youth in marine environmental activity in Newfoundland and Labrador. Roughly 80 junior high and high school students from the Burin Peninsula will attend, taking part in a day-long series of thought-provoking presentations and interactive discussions that focus on marine environmental issues representing leadership and career opportunities for youth.
“The Ocean Net Youth and the Oceans conferences play a valuable role in the development of youth who wish to further their studies of oceans and marine issues,” said Glenn Blackwood, vice-president, Memorial University (Marine Institute). “These students will also learn about the educational options available at MI that will enable them to make a positive impact on our province’s ocean sector.”
Among the speakers at Thursday’s Youth and the Oceans conference will be Justin Dearing, conference co-ordinator, MI Ocean Net, and Donovan Taplin, Students on Ice alumnus.
“This conference provides youth with fresh new ideas, uplifting realizations and a powerful feeling of hope when it comes to our unique opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador’s marine sectors,” said Mr. Dearing. “Hands-on learning, motivating experiences and belief in their potential to make a difference in our marine environment are at the heart of what makes this conference a success each year.”
The Ocean Net Youth and the Oceans conference is supported by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
