SUBJECT: New chairperson appointed to One Ocean board of directors

William E. (Bill) Wells was appointed to the One Ocean board as chairperson in July 2012 and will attend his first board meeting in this role in October, 2012. Mr. Wells succeeds Dr. Arthur May who retired from the position in June 2012 after 10 years of service.
Mr. Wells has more than 40 years’ experience working in law, the fishery, energy and in advisory roles with business and community organizations. He practised law before being appointed president of the Fisheries Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Limited in 1979. In 1983 Mr. Wells was appointed president of the Canadian Saltfish Corporation and in 1985 was appointed executive vice-president of Fisheries Products International Limited. Mr. Wells was appointed President and chief executive officer of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and the Hydro Group of Companies in January, 1996. He was a director of the Canadian Electricity Association and the Energy Council of Canada until his retirement in 2004.
Mr. Wells served as director and chair of the Fisheries Council of Canada and the Fisheries Association of Newfoundland and Labrador and on a variety of committees and special advisory groups including the Atlantic Regional Council, Ocean Production Enhancement Network, Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation and Technology, Northern Cod Research Program, Fisheries Sectoral Advisory Group on International Trade and as a member of the Seafood Inspection Policy Advisory Committee. Mr. Wells was also the founding president of the Canadian Association of Prawn Producers.
“Both the fishing industry and the petroleum industry are significant to Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Mr. Wells upon his appointment as chairperson of One Ocean. “Co-operation between the two industries is vital as ocean resources are shared. One Ocean provides a forum to address matters of mutual concern and I look forward to working with its members on future initiatives.”
One Ocean is the liaison organization established by and for the fishing and petroleum industries of Newfoundland and Labrador. It began 10 years ago and focuses on facilitating and promoting communication and information exchange between the fishing and petroleum industries.
The continued growth of the fishing and petroleum industries is critical to the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador. One Ocean provides a neutral and practical forum to enhance sustainable co-existence and facilitates communication, understanding and co-operation.
