SUBJECT: Memorial’s Marine Institute to celebrate naval cadet gradation

The Royal Canadian Navy and the Marine Institute will welcome 15 new marine engineering technicians into the ranks as they graduate from the Marine Engineering Technician Training program.
The graduation will take place on Friday Aug. 9, at 10:30 a.m. at the Canadian Forces Station St. John’s Drill Hall in Pleasantville, building 316. Guests are required to be seated by 10:15 a.m. Media are invited to attend the ceremony and speak with navy representatives and graduates.
Commander David Benoit, commandant, Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School, will be the reviewing officer at the ceremony. Lieutenant-Commander Alan Brown, detachment commander, Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School Detachment St. John’s, and Glenn Blackwood, vice-president (Memorial University) Marine Institute, will also be in attendance.
Matthew Hewitt will be honoured at the ceremony with the Marine Institute Bronze Medal for Academic Achievement.
Graduates hail from Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Manitoba. They will be stationed in Halifax, N. S or Esquimalt, B.C., where they will be employed as marine engineering technicians.
The five-year Marine Engineering Technician Training Plan is a co-operative venture between the Royal Canadian Navy and the Marine Institute. The first two years are spent studying to be marine engineering technicians at the Marine Institute campus in St. John’s.
Upon graduating from the two-year diploma course, the naval cadets advance to full-time careers within the Royal Canadian Navy, serving for at least the next three years.
The relationship between the Department of National Defence and the Marine Institute has been an enormous success for both organizations since its establishment in 1992.
