SUBJECT: Memorial University’s Brain Storm 2013 competition seeking high school participants

Brain Storm is a provincewide competition for high school students and organized through Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine. It is aimed at high school students taking biology, advanced placement psychology or other high school science courses.
In preparation for the provincial competition in St. John’s on Saturday, April 20, students will write a quiz at their high school based on a standardized information booklet. The top 50 students provincewide will participate in the provincial competition, which is oral and written and offers a wide variety of prizes. The first prize winner will win a trip to Hamilton, Ont., in June to represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the national Brain Bee competition.
Graduate student Brian Roome is organizing this year’s competition. “Interested students and parents can get their biology teachers to contact me if they are interested in organizing quizzes at the local school,” he said. “I want to spread the word to any biology teachers who would be excited to host local competitions.”
Mr. Roome said students travelling to St. John’s for the provincial competition will be given free tours of some neuroscience research labs at Memorial University.
“The Brain Storm competition is an effort to encourage students to learn about the brain and consider neuroscience as a career,” he said.
